The Sublime Paralytic is the English narrated version of my documentary on Apolinario Mabini. Narration by Cris Lorenzana; FSL interpretation by Bayani Generoso. It is will followed by the Filipino-narrated version, PULE: Utak ng Rebolusyon, now in post-production. John Baliza interpreted the story in Filipino Sign Language while Dr. Apolonio Chua narrated the story. All interviews were interpreted in FSL by Febe Sevilla. Translation of the story from English to Filipino by Dr. Ruby Alcantara.

Winner Ka Pinoy’s Cris Lorenzana Narrates the Story of “Apolinario Mabini: The Sublime Paralytic”

With first timer music scorer, Thristan Mendoza, and first timer Mabini reader, Abner Manlapaz, I got another first timer for our docu, APOLINARIO MABINI: THE SUBLIME PARALYTIC.

Cris Lorenzana, an inspiration speaker hosting Winner Ka Pinoy! at RMN Manila DZXL 558 is our docu’s narrator. Every Sunday at 11 a.m., her program airs and is heard nationwide.

I did not know her at all when I invited her to join our advocacy documentary on Mabini. But I usually listen to her program being one of the rare programs that talk on being positive, on being a winner… Her voice sounded good and cool to me, sympathetic and I thought she could help keep the hearing audience “awake” while listening to historical facts on Mabini. Luckily, she decided to join the team! So far, comments on her voice and delivery are quite positive. Her voice is clear, and her diction is good according to those who have already watched the film.

Narrated by Cris in English, the film is also captioned in English, and in most parts have FSL interpretations and/or insets. However, the interviews were largely conducted in Filipino. No doubt, we can say that the film is multilingual. The Malolos segment however was narrated by Bayani Generoso because of Cris’ unavailability after two recording sessions. The Sublime Paralytic has also a Filipino-narrated version, now in post-production. The title is PULE: UTAK NG REBOLUSYON, narrated in Filipino by Dr. Apolonio Chua from the Department of Filipino, University of the Philippines.

FSL Interpreters for THE SUBLIME PARALYTIC are Bayani Generoso, Febe Sevilla, Gess Michael Abrenica, Jr. and CJ Patriarca. FSL Interpreters for the Filipino-narrated version are John Baliza, Febe Sevilla, Gess Michael Abrenica, Jr. and Maria Elena Lozada. Janus Victoria and I wrote the script in English, and translated in Filipino language by Dr. Ruby Alcantara, also from the UP Filipino Department. 1899 documents in Spanish were translated by Prof. Anna Maria Yglopaz of the UP Dept. of European Languages.

In Promotion of Filipino Sign Language: “APOLINARIO MABINI: THE SUBLIME PARALYTIC”

SILENT ODYSSEY [2008], the first feature-length documentary on Deaf Filipinos was produced seven years ago. It had segments on the Filipino Sign Language [FSL] origin, importance to the Deaf of sign language, and the need for recognition of their linguistic human rights. Surprisingly, those in the Department of Education did not even know that FSL existed. Blind to its existence then??? and Now?

Thus, FSL in APOLINARIO MABINI: THE SUBLIME PARALYTIC [and soon! in PULE: UTAK ng REBOLUSYON] was intentionally used again– to prove that it exists and keeps on flourishing through the years. Largely interpreted in FSL, it is primarily aimed at providing Deaf individuals access to information on Mabini, the First Secretary of Foreign Affairs and the First Prime Minister of the Philippines. No doubt, the visual medium is one of the best ways to help promote FSL, its recognition as the preferred language of Deaf Filipinos, and in the preservation of Deaf language and culture. Too bad that up to now, the government is not officially recognizing FSL as the national sign language of Deaf Pinoys.

John Baliza Interprets in PULE: Utak ng Rebolusyon, the Filipino-narrated version of The Sublime Paralytic

As former student of FSL moreover, under the Filipino Sign Language Program of DLS-CSB School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies [SDEAS], it is one of my aims to provide the hearing students of FSLLP a film that will help them get familiar with FSL signs. Exposure to signs will aid them in improving their receptive skill because it was, and still is admittedly, my problem up to now!

CJ Patriarca’s Special Appearance in The Sublime Paralytic

Former member of the SILENT STEPS, Catherine J. Patriarca joined in the making of THE SUBLIME PARALYTIC as one of the four Filipino Sign Language interpreters in “Apolinario Mabini: The Sublime Paralytic.”

I first met her while she was still studying at DLS-CSB School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies. I was then a student of Filipino Sign Language under the FSLLP Program. I interviewed her for my film SILENT ODYSSEY, a documentary that celebrates the talents of Deaf Filipinos. A theater performer and a dancer, she also appeared in one of the five segments of A Mi Patria, the collection of five poems of Rizal interpreted in Filipino Sign Language.

Daily Prompt: Musical / Role of Music on a Deaf Dancer

I am not a musical person but I love music. However, I am more of a visual person so I see music in rhythms of lines, geometry in buildings, patterns of shapes…on designs of leaves and flowers. With or without music therefore, I “see” music somehow. That’s probably one of the reasons why I enjoy being with Deaf persons. When I started learning sign language, I have first of all learned how to put off the sounds — whether music or simply noise that enter my ear from the surroundings especially when I talk to them.  That’s something I found quite necessary to be able to “listen” to their talking hands. I had to focus on their hands and visual expressions to be able to understand what they are saying. Without practice, signing is just like any other spoken language. In fact, I am still not adept to it. I need to exert a lot of effort to be able to communicate with them. It is quite a challenging but enjoyable task to do.

Instead therefore of writing about the role of music in myself, it would be more interesting I believe to share with you the role of music in a Deaf dancer named CJ Patriarca whom I interviewed for my documentary entitled “Silent Odyssey.” It amazed me to know that to be able to express in dance a certain feeling, she had to “listen” to the music by feeling the vibration of the music beats. She puts her ear against the music player or on the floor to “listen’ and/or touches them first to feel the beat to be able to study the rhythm — is it slow / sad? fast or happy? Feeling the rhythm guides her; she starts counting the beats and from there interprets and then performs the dance with a very talented Deaf choreographer. However, I had asked for a  reversal of what they used to do. Instead of “hearing” / feeling the music first before the dance interpretation, I asked them to interpret the idea first — i.e. the feeling of isolation and Deaf discrimination that I needed for the docu. After that, I called in the music scorer. He studied their movements, measured its length, then scored the music based on the mood of their interpretation. It had worked. The film is official entry in the upcoming 3rd Hongkong International Deaf Film Festival to be held  between February 22-24, 2013 at the HongKong Arts Centre.

I have witnessed the role of sound and music on the members of the Silent Steps, an all-Deaf dance student playgroup from DLS-CSB School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies where CJ used to be a member, the school where I studied Filipino Sign Language.

Visit to the Rizal Shrine in Calamba_Setting of Awit ni Maria Clara

This afternoon, I went with Manang Fely to visit the Rizal Shrine in Calamba and his Bantayog located opposite the Calamba City Hall in Laguna. The shrine has few furnitures left. I had been to the place when I was small, and I could only recall before going there the fan that fansied my imagination at that time, and the well. The nipa house looks different now. I met the curator and informed her of my plan to shoot the Deaf interpretation of Awit ni Maria Clara. I gave her a copy of the Natinal Historical Commission of the Philippines’ letter of permission that was granted to us as early as April.

Calamba has become a very busy city — crowded, noisy, with lots of tricycles, sidewalk vendors, etc. SM Calamba is prominent as well as Liana’s. From Buendia in Pasay, we took a bus [Green Star] ride up to what they call Crossing. There we took a tricycle to the house of Rizal at P40. We reached the house after 4p.m. and since the sign board says that visiting hours is only up to 4 p.m., I was a little upset. I thought I could not go inside it. The security guard motioned us to go in because the shrine is actually open up to 4.30 p.m. We proceeded from there to what they call Bantayog or Plaza Park, where the newest and supposedly tallest statue of Rizal can be found. I want to shoot the 5th poem there. Now, my mind is working on how to shoot A FILIPINAS… And I think CJ Patriarca will be best to act as symbol of Mother Filipinas..

[Update on this entry]. It’s October 7, 2012! Time is incredible! It flew so fast, I forgot that I wrote the above post until I saw it on my stat today. Anyway, I shot A Filipinas and I liked its outcome. I remember just doing the storyboard in my head as I didn’t have the time to do because of Asiong Salonga film we were then working on – overnights – to meet supposedly the Venice International Film Festival deadline. This poem interpreted in Filipino Sign Language turned out to be quite symbolic and more that what I expected. Even if the camera work were not that satisfactory to me, still I was then quite happy with the treatment. It wasn’t CJ Patriarca who ended up as Mother Philippines but Lynn Cappal! It was also Aldrin Gabriel who ended up performing for the second time. The person meant to do it was nowhere to found. For some photos taken during the shooting, click the link below:

Goodbye Asiong Salonga 2011 For Now! Welcome Back Rizal!

I am set to do the continuation of my small film for a great man, Dr. Jose Rizal, leaving behind gangster Asiong Salonga, and the big budgeted film for a while. They are going to shoot the four [not two] remaining sequences, and I have to shoot my 3rd poem for my own project almost at the same time. Good timing!!! Anyway, if it hadn’t jibed, I would have to take time off from editing it just the same because this has long been programmed.

”]Deaf interpreter / performer of A LAS FLORES DE HEIDELBERG will be Romalito Mallari, of Dinig Sana Kita fame. He also appeared in my docu on Deaf Filipinos, Silent Odyssey [2008] as dancing partner of CJ Patriarca, another talented Deaf gal. Rome is scheduled to fit his costume tomorrow. Shooting will be at PEN Learning Center at DLS-CSB SDEAS on Friday, August 26. This is the first time to have very, very short time allotment to spend for my pre-production work which I consider to be very important. Tomorrow and Thursday require heavy preparations and running around to coordinate people, places and things. I have yet to restudy my shot lists. And since this will be my first chroma project, I do find it interesting! I know I will learn something new.

I am also coordinating with Spanish readers from Instituto Cervantes referred by its Cultural Attache, Mr. Fons. Ms. Beatriz Alvarez-Tardio already confirmed her participation in the project.
